There's a lot of good being done here.
We are staying with friends who operate a program to help homeless and substance-dependent people return to productive, independent lives.
The program, which serves some 200 mostly male residents, is operated out of a compound on a former Cadbury estate in the countryside outside of Birmingham, England. They also have other houses around the UK.
"We are the last chance for a lot of these people," said Mary Alice Martin, our host and co-director of Betel of Britain with her husband, Kent.
Betel is funded purely through some philanthropy and mostly the work of its residents, who operate non-profit businesses to restore and sell old furniture, perform gardening work and bag groceries for donations.
The photo is of an old windmill just off the property that has been converted into a house. It and the Betel property sit among rolling hills of sheep farms.
